In Singapore, a former People's Association (PA) employee, Soh Gim Loon, 40, found himself in hot water after being accused of defrauding the statutory board out of nearly S$15,000 (US$11,500) in 2023. Soh faced four counts of cheating at the State Courts, with charges revealing a pattern of deceit. And this is the part most people miss: He allegedly claimed expenses for events that never took place, such as a dragon boat activity and a durian party, while inflating costs for others, like a National Day event and a Christmas celebration. For instance, on July 9, 2023, he reportedly submitted claims of S$2,850 and S$5,950 for the National Day event and the dragon boat activity, respectively. However, the actual expenses for the National Day event were lower, and the dragon boat activity was entirely fictional. Just three days later, he allegedly filed a S$5,000 claim for a durian party that never occurred. By December 15, 2023, he had purportedly submitted another claim of S$950 for a Christmas event, despite the actual costs being significantly less.
In total, Soh is accused of misleading the PA into disbursing S$14,750. He has indicated his intention to plead guilty, with his hearing scheduled for January 6. If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison and a hefty fine.
