Brandon Moreno, the Mexican MMA star, has stepped up to the plate, offering to be the backup fighter for the highly anticipated UFC flyweight title fight at UFC 323. This weekend's event promises to be an action-packed affair, with the co-main event featuring a title defense by Alexandre Pantoja against Joshua Van.
But here's where it gets controversial... Moreno, fresh off two unanimous decision wins against top contenders, is willing to step in at a moment's notice if any last-minute issues arise with the main event fighters. He plans to make the championship weight, just in case.
"For the belt, I'd do anything," Moreno stated in an interview. "It's not ideal, but I'm ready if needed. Pantoja and Van are usually on point with their weight, so I'm focused on my upcoming fight against Tatsuro Taira."
Moreno's confidence is well-founded. He's on a winning streak, having defeated Amir Albazi and Steve Erceg in dominant fashion. A victory over Taira could secure him a title shot, and he's not taking any chances.
"The Assassin Baby" predicts Pantoja will retain the title, but he's not ruling out an upset by Van. "Pantoja has an impressive legacy, but Van has youth on his side. He's fearless and confident, and he's living his dream. I was surprised when he beat Royval, so this fight has me intrigued."
So, will Moreno's backup plan be needed? And if so, can he step up and claim the title? The answers await at UFC 323.
